Laboratories

Our faculty members actively research on their fields of interest and three research focuses can be defined as Family Research, Trauma Studies and Real-world Cognition Research; and it is expected that research labs will be opened for use in the next academic year. Since research experience is a unique way to strengthen a psychology student’s capability students have been especially encouraged to participate in the research explained below.

Focused Research Areas

Family Research:
Family research has been carried out in two different tracks: “Family and Development Studies” and “Family Life Cycle and Crises”.

Track I: Family and Development Studies:
This group of research focuses on contextual and socioeconomic characteristics of families, parental child rearing and parenting behaviors, and parent characteristics investigating their influence on children’s and adolescents’ cognitive, social and emotional development, psychosocial functionality and school success. The last and ongoing research Project is related to how parental authority and control have been perceived by parents and their adolescent children, and how these perceptions reflect on parent-adolescent relations and influence on developmental outcomes of the adolescent, and how parameters such as social status of the family and social change contribute all of those associations.

Track II: Studies on Family Life Cycle and Crises
This track focuses on the study of the family system and individual family members in relation to family life cycle, crises and psychological adjustment. Within this context, we are conducting research to understand the family dynamics and functioning with regard to their complex interaction with situational as well as developmental crises; processes of loss and grief. and transgenerationol transmission. We also have projects on prenatal attachment which is a recently emerging subject of study in the field of psychology.

Trauma Studies
We are committed to improve the understanding of the impacts of traumatic events – ranging from natural or human-caused disasters to violence, abuse and life-threatening illnesses – on individuals, families and communities; and enhance resilience and coping capacities at all these levels. We collaborate with academicians and psychology students from other universities to pursue our aim through conducting scientific research, providing professional training, and helping develop a learning community in the field of psychological trauma.

Real-World Cognition Research
We primarily focus on understanding real world cognition. There are three themes underlying our research in real world cognition lab. First, we explore how different cueing conditions influence the prevalence of direct and generative retrievals. Second, we study how emotion affects recall properties of autobiographical memories. For example, retrieval problems in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression are examples of our emotion and memory research topics. Third, We have been working on Turkish adaptation of Transitional Impact Scale (Svob, Brown, Reddon, Uzer & Lee, 2013), which provides a measure of change for important life transitions such as immigration, divorce, and death of a close family member, and we are planning to apply this scale to a wider range of events and different populations to understand the relations between transitions, stress, trauma and cognition better.
